X.  CLARENCE LLEWELLYN CAVERLY   1898 - 1966
(William C., Redford, Charles H., Philip Jr., Philip Sr., John Sr., Peter I, Peter Gerardus, Jean)

In May 1931 Cora received a modest inheritance from an uncle who had never had children.  They bought a
1931 Chevy with this money and rented a garage
from a neighbor to store it since they already had
a 1927 Chevy.  This was during the depression
and they were the only ones on the street to
have two cars.

Around 1935 Clarence had all his teeth
pulled.  At that time it was thought that they
were poisoning his system and causing his
high blood pressure.

In 1918 he had registered for military service
and had been rejected due to a mitral
murmur.  When World War II came, having
a Victory Garden was a patriotic practice.
These were wartime vegetable gardens

cultivated by noncombatant citizens for the
temporary increase of domestic food
production.  Clarence bought property on the
west side of Saginaw to grow a Victory
Garden. Several years later when he had
decided to sell the property, he was seen
showing it to a colored gentleman.  The
neighbors in the area, not wanting colored
people to move into their neighborhood,
banded together and bought the lot.
Clarence had worked as a coresetter at Grey Iron
Foundry and took early retirement in 1954 due to a
previous stroke and ill health.  To keep busy and for
extra income after retirement, he collected old
newspapers, rolled them up into six to eight inch
logs, and sold them to Stevens Van Lines.  They
used them for packing.  He also did handywork and
yard work.  He loved to go fishing and berrying in
season.

He and Cora were members of Epworth
Methodist Church and Clarence was also a
member of the Oriental Lodge, I.O.O.F.  He died
at home on Jan. 2, 1966.  Cora died of congestive
heart failure on June 25, 1984.  They are buried at
Roselawn Cemetery in Saginaw, MI.
